Berlin 21 Years Later

On February 9th & 10th, 1990, three months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, I took a set of photos in both West Berlin and East Berlin. It was my first trip to Berlin. On the evening of February 9th, I photographed at the Brandenburg Gate on the West Berlin side. On February 10th, I crossed over to East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie. I walked around, got lost, took pictures, and then crossed back to the West.

On February 9th & 10th, 2011, I returned to Berlin with the same camera and the contact sheets from the original set of photos. Over the course of two days I tried to find each of the original locations from where I had taken a photo in 1990. At each location I took a new photo from as close to the original position as I could get.

Berlin 21 Years Later is a record of what changes and what remains the same, what is saved and what is merely remembered.
